Today, I went out on a whale watch. Some of you may know that I've got a particular fascination for whales on two religious directions (both the Goddess we've been working with for coven stuff, for whom Stella Maris is not a bad descriptive to be going on with, and a particular fascination with orcas.)

So, given that I normally live about as far from a whale as it is possible to live and be in North America, and given that I am finally out in Boston during whale watching season, I obviously had to go do a whale watch while I'm out here. That was this morning, with the friend I refer to as my oldest friend (we've been friends since I was in 2nd grade and she was in 3rd. She is also a librarian, a musician, and we have a bunch of other stuff in common.)

The ride out was a little bumpy and brisk, by my standards (and chilly by everyone else's.) Massachusetts has been wrapped in about 20+ days of gloom and fog and mist, and we had that going out too. However, we had *many* whales - photos below the cut. We saw about 15 individual whales, including a mother and her calf who the naturalist could identify, and of all three of the main species who show up in Stellwagen Bank. (Those are humpbacks, fins, and minke whales - the latter, our naturalist said, are normally curious but very shy. Not this one - it was in and around our boat most of the time, often very close by.)

I did not get any truly stunning photos, and we didn't get anything as amazing as a breech - but we did get a lot of whales contentedly feeding and being whalelike, and it was very soothing.

We came back, had lunch at the Legal Seafood on the Aquarium dock (as said in November, best placed restaurant ever.), then puttered around before coming to see the Star Trek movie at 4:40. (My friend had seen it, I hadn't yet, because my May and June were miserably busy. I am very glad I got to see it on big screen, though.)

Because the photos are on LJ's scrapbook, and I don't feel like fighting with the code, have a link to the gallery instead: http://pics.livejournal.com/jenett/gallery/0001yf8t
