Have gotten email from my mother, after communicating the job and making a request for help - for various reasons, which I'll write out at some point, I just hit "It would make my life *hugely* easier to have a laptop now". I'd be able to afford one by the end of summer, but having it now would be a lot better. So I asked Mom for a loan.
She's sending me a check, part of which is a "Congrats on having gotten a job for hard work and competence" present, and part of which is an interest free loan (and I'll comfortably be able to pay her back by the end of the summer at the latest, even with adding memory, buying a spiffy laptop bag, and so on.)
I plan to get one of the 13" aluminum MacBooks. (The white ones are cheaper, but the white ones are also a little less sturdy of a case, *and* they're visually close to the school-owned laptops, which can be a little problematic.)
This means that I will probably turn the iMac into a DVD and music playing station (and backup server, among other things), though I'll maybe see about upgrading it to 10.5 as well, and move it into the bedroom, and can then use the laptop to do many useful things. It also means I can look at other rearrangements for my front room, if I don't need to maintain a permanent workspace there. We'll think about that (as I do like having my water mug, etc. handy.)
(Theoretically, I could ask work for a laptop - but I know it's not in anyone's budget, and it's not the time to ask for large expenses. Plus, if it's work's, I can't do a bunch of install stuff on it that would make my life simpler. If it's mine, I can optimise my heart out.)
This is also, I hope, the last time I will need to ask my mother for money. After this, I can afford my own toys (or it's my own damn fault if I can't.) The thoughtful may also have noticed that this means I can write and do other useful things when I go to Boston, which is a plus.
Ok. Someone should now take my E key away from me maybe.
