It makes sense that my first real post here be something that talks about why I'm here.

I have a general ethic of supporting individuals and community projects over business-centered businesses when I can. I want to do that here. I want to be somewhere that actively values and supports volunteers, offers ways to learn skills, encourages conversation about choices, and that allows for creative solutions that build community, and that isn't centered solely on profit.

(I also want to be somewhere that has a sustainable business plan, mind you, and somewhere that has a 'if one of us gets hit by a bus' redundancy system in place. Because I am practical about how community stuff works and should work.)

I'm also excited about the focus on creativity, because it's somewhere I've wanted to put more of my time. This is a chance to make a deliberate choice, a door into other conversations - and I think I'd be foolish to avoid it. I've been neglecting my music far too long - and while I write almost no fiction of any kind, I want to do a lot more religious writing. Things like that.

US laws and other requirements around online content are truly messed up. I'm excited that Dreamwidth is making a choice to directly engage with the issues - and for both professional and personal reasons, I want to support that actively, not just passively. That means both giving them money for a paid account - and actively sharing content that (I hope!) helps make it a vibrant living place in various ways.

There are a bunch of features (current and planned) that I'm really looking forward to, many of which are things that would make my life easier. I'm already deeply enjoying the navigation, which makes incredible sense. (We'll put it this way: not only do I not hate the red default navsite, but I don't even hate the navigation bar. They're both actually *useful*.)

Integration with other sites (via OpenID and other tools), easy cross-posting, various post management features, longer comment length limits, the idea of being able to store drafts of posts, and a number of other things make me go "Oooh".

I'm looking forward to new interactions. I'm looking forward to new configurations of interaction as people create new spaces for new reasons. I want to see what possibilities come up when you've got somewhat different combinations of choices and discussions and feedback.

Practicalities
- I did import my LiveJournal entries and comments, but I'm currently working on deleting many mundane entries and things I no longer want to keep in active access (and tagging the rest for easy finding.) There's 3500 entries involved, so it'll take me a little while. Archived entries from LJ have a different userpic (that says: "Archived from LiveJournal") to help make it clear, too.

- I'm not sure yet how I'm going to handle access/subscription division stuff. I do plan to make more public entries than I have previously. (Not hard, actually.)

I expect most of the protected entries will be about religious issues and topics: if you're particularly interested in these, tell me a bit about yourself and your interests if I don't already know you from elsewhere. (One good way to do this is to look at some of my public stuff - my public religious blog is a great way to do that - and tell me what you liked about a post.
