2026/072: Disfigured — Amanda Leduc

Why, in all of these stories about someone who wants to be something or someone else, was it always the individual who needed to change, and never the world?

Subtitled 'On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space', this is partly a memoir of the author's experience of cerebral palsy, and partly a survey of the ways in which fairytales 'other' people with disabilities, people who don't look right, people who are different.Read more... )

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Joyce: Buffy, terrible things have happened. What were you doing?
Spike: What, your mum doesn't know?
Buffy glares at Spike.
Joyce: (to Spike) Know what?
Buffy: (faces her mom) That I'm, uh... in a band. A-a rock band with Spike here. (shoots Spike a look)
Spike: Right. She plays the, the triangle.
Buffy: Drums.
Spike: Drums, yeah. She's, uh, hell on the old skins, you know.
Joyce: (unconvinced) Hmm. And, uh, what do you do?
Spike: Well, I sing.

This Thursday has one minute left where I am, aaahhhhh!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

fraught

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 22, 2026 is:

fraught • \FRAWT\  • adjective

Fraught describes something that causes or involves a lot of emotional stress or worry. When fraught is used in the phrase “fraught with,” it means “full of something bad or unwanted.”

// The siblings had a fraught relationship.

// The paper was poorly researched and fraught with errors.

See the entry >

Examples:

"We might think replicating one of these ideas will deliver that perfectly walkable, equitable, sustainable and prosperous city of our hopeful imagination. Not likely. Many of these were hard wins, often fraught and contested in their local context." — Gia Biagi, The Chicago Tribune, 5 Apr. 2026

Did you know?

An early instance of the word fraught occurs in the 14th century poem Richard Coer de Lyon, about England's King Richard I, aka Richard the Lionheart. The line "The drowmound was so hevy fraught / That unethe myght it saylen aught" describes a large fast-sailing ship so heavily fraught—that is, loaded—that it can barely sail. The poet's use of fraught is typical for the time; originally, something that was fraught was laden with freight. For centuries, fraught continued to be used in relation to loaded ships, but that use is now considered archaic. These days, fraught is used in reference to situations that are heavy with tension, emotion, or some other weighty characteristic.

Reviewing Red Dragon (2002), I guess

Red Dragon pretty run-of-the-mill thriller, unfortunately. I’m not sure if I feel that way because of the film itself or because of the source material.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike the book, but I do find it the least interesting among the original three Hannibal novels. This is perhaps because I simply do not find Will to be an interesting or compelling protagonist in the book, and the same is true here.

Hopkins isn’t bad at all as Hannibal, but I don’t find his role as enjoyable as the other films where he portrays the character.

Truly, the most engaging things about this film for me are Dolarhyde and Reba.

I’ll say that the last 10 minutes are pretty exciting too, but as a whole, this thing is a bit plodding. It doesn’t really feel like anyone’s heart was fully in this project.

Sleep doctor again

I set my alarm for 9:00 which I didn't really need to do, but I got up and had breakfast and coffee and showered and dressed. Then I killed time til 11:45. My shipment of turtle food from Petco came.

Then I left for the sleep doctor. Got a 44 bus immediately, and took that to the 46. It was raining but not bad enough for me to get out the umbrella that I had brought with me.

Got the 46 and got off just before the bus turns onto Lakeville Road. Then rather than fuss with the N25, I got an Uber for the rest of the way.

I got there comfortably early, but was unhappily surprised when they said they didn't have any record of my appointment. I was upset. but they fit me in anyway. I think, judging by the other issues I've had and listening to them while I was waiting, that their office needs organizing better.

But anyway, I finally got to see the doctor, only a little bit late, and got the results of the sleep study. No big surprise, I have severe sleep apnea. Apparently I had 42 instances during the study. So, a CPAP machine for me.

She put in the order, and I should have it somewhere in a week to 10 days. Or at least hear from the company. And if I don't... I call them back and ask what's going on. Because sometimes things fall through the cracks. Which the doctor actually said. *sigh*

Anyway, I have a follow up appointment for two months, I had to make sure it was the week before I have scheduled Oldest Brother's memorial up at the cottage, which is July 18th. So it's July 9th for the doctor.

So then I walked the several blocks to the N25 bus. It was raining then so I did use the umbrella, but the rain slowly died down.

Took the N25, accidentally got off a stop too early, but it was no problem to walk to the 46 stop. Took that back to Main Street and got the 44. Took that home.

Got here and found to my surprise that my book from Barnes and Noble had arrived, Penric's Intrigues.

Set about trying to find what I was sure I had, two other Penric collections that I had gotten for Oldest Brother in the nursing home, and which I was sure I had kept and put in my shelves... but I can't find them anywhere. So I guess I let them go, which pisses me off. Of course I have all the Penric's on my Nook, but I wanted them in paper too.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick was texting, ze had issues with zer plane trip back today. Finally ze cancelled zer first flight which would have been to Atlanta, because zer second flight, from Atlanta to NYC, was cancelled. Instead ze is taking a more expensive direct flight tomorrow morning. Hopefully I'll see zer on Saturday for zer birthday.

I Teamed the FWiB, and we talked for an hour and a half and a little bit more, because at 8:30 I called Middle Brother. He is fine, he went to 7'11 on Tuesday, which he enjoyed, and he's looking forward to a Memorial Day barbecue.

Then I had dinner, and went to the bedroom and played solitaire til pet feeding time. Then I fed the pets, using up the last of the older turtle food I had, and started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The sleep place fit me in and I didn't have to come back another day.

3. [personal profile] mashfanficchick worked out the plane problems.

4. Middle Brother is happy.

5. I didn't get seriously rained on.

6. Roses are blooming.

Went to breakfast with my dad today, which was nice. :) He's in town for a while working on recording.

He's doing pretty well after his various health things. He's had a few cardiac issues (though not a heart attack.) Sounds like it mostly stemmed from strain related to sleep apnea, which he's had for as long as I remember, but never wanted to treat. That's doing better, so he's back to getting some actual sleep, and that will hopefully also help the lingering heart issues. He's going in for another heart surgery sometime soon. He couldn't remember what the procedure is called, but it's inserting something into the enlarged chamber of the heart to help prevent clotting. (The explanation is a little longer, but that's the gist of it.) He's looking forward to that procedure, because then maybe he can stop taking the blood thinners he's on, because he hates them and they're expensive.

The recording seems to be going well. This is the same album project that he's been working on for a couple years now, but he's changed the whole style and tone of the project a couple of times. (Two years ago he was feeling a lot more optimistic about the world, and that has gotten to be less and less the case, which has changed what he wants for his music.) Though he says he was expecting to look at the various songs he's written and was considering and decide to scrap it all and start over. Instead, he said he's actually really happy with a lot of them, more so than he anticipated, so that's nice.

Hopefully we'll get together again sometime next week before he's on his way back to Arizona.

Chapter 40: Latil needs the Great Sage to perform the exorcism of the body but they are in hiding and the mediator has been murdered.

Hahaha Latil finally goes to Klein and he's wearing a mud mask. 😂

There's no way Klein is in love with Latil so why does it matter so much to him whether she loves him or not? Does he have a secret inferiority complex towards Hyacinth? Did his mother not love him? You know it's not because he doesn't have plenty of girls willing to jump his bones.

Chapter 41-42: Instead of reflecting on what he did wrong Klein is all 'me me me!!' *smh* Even if he thinks Latil is in love with him his behavior is terrible.

Chapter 43: Oh, did Latil actually kiss Klein?

Chapter 44: "You don't like anyone outside of yourself, Master Tasir." Boy you're risking it.

Latil really only has Sonnaught who truly sees her for who she is and only wants her, all the consorts just want some version of her. I don't blame her for not responding to their desperation for her. To begin with, she's had no intention of letting them win her heart and the sooner they realize that the better.

Chapter 45: Lmao at Latil making the other consorts dance together.

The Great Sage is threatened but badass Latil steps in. For some reason she's suddenly able to read thoughts.

Chapter 46: Latil's reaction to the Great Sage is amusing. He is not what I expected. X'D

He doesn't know anything that can help but his presence itself suppresses black magic.

Chapter 47: The Great Sage asks to be in Latil's harem for his protection.

The act to get him into the harem was so funny!

Chapter 48: Carlein's servant is named Daymond.

Thula is somehow alive and they had a marble in the Great Sage's head connecting him to one of his servants??

Chapter 49: Well The Fox (Thula's servant) is definitely Guesta. Whyyy.

Great Sage = Zaicin, his servant is Gubel. Zaicin is too funny.

Chapter 50: When Tasir's shirt button 'accidentally' snapped off. 🤣 But that hug was really cute.

Chapter 51: This is the last chapter and I'll be caught up!!

Okay Klein acting like a puppy doesn't annoy me for once since Latil thinks it's cute.

Ann Leckie's Radiant Star is excellent and has prompted me to reread the entire Imperial Radch series. I am deep in the throes of Breq & Seivarden appreciation, and falling in love with the Presger Translators all over again.

I'm also rereading Alan Moore's Promethea, which just gets better no matter how many times I pick it up, and will pick up Tom Strong and Top 10 shortly.

AEW continues to kill it with its storylines, and I am really looking forward to this week's PPV. Ospreay vs. Samoa Joe will be fire.

Bungie officially killed Destiny 2, which is not surprising but still a major bummer.

Our so-new-I-haven't-nicknamed-it-yet D&D group recently played our second Wild Beyond the Witchlight session and: great group and good DMing. I can't wait till our next session.

May has been my Month of Metal: I've seen The Hu, Apocalyptica, The Rasmus, Godsmack, Stone Temple Pilots, Dethklok, Amon Amarth, Castle Rat, Dance With The Dead, Magic Sword and (not metal) Toadies, Local H, Vandoliers, and Megan MacDuffie. This has been a banner year for lives shows, and we've got a bunch more coming up too.

This is hilarious! You only need the first six minutes until you get to his first commercial, the rest of the video is just more of the same. But it is funny.

I saw another video that explained. "Anatoly" is actually named Vladimir and placed 3rd in his weight class in a world championship. He's a pretty serious lifter, just happens to be a bit on the small side at 78 kg. So basically it's world champion-class vs gym rats.

But I love the mop!

This is the sign-up post to get a bingo card for the seventh round of Comment Bingo. Please leave the username(s) that you will be using to comment and you will be assigned a card. You don't need a Dreamwidth account to participate. If you want more details (including opt out rules), the following links should hopefully clear things up.

We all know how good comments can make a creator feel, and even a 'this is great' can sometimes brighten their day. Whether you're a newbie or been in fandom for years, don't comment at all, sometimes comment, or comment all the time, this is for you. Maybe it will help you discover stories you wouldn't have otherwise, ones that you loved and forgot about and/or fics you somehow missed. Forgot to leave a comment before? Want a reason to comment again? Now is the time!

[community profile] comment_bingo is a low pressure, low commitment comm. There aren't any consequences to not finishing your card so if you don't complete the challenge in time, you are more than welcome to sign up again (and you don't need to let me know that you didn't finish/provide any explanations).
