My father adored Marsh, and I've sort of bounced off him every time I've tried, but it's probably time for another round. And Rendell is a good rec.
(Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels is one of my standard re-reads, but I should probably figure out which of the Amelia books I am missing and replace them before I try to read the series again, and that takes brain. I know I'm missing the first one.)
