My apartment is exceedingly lovely. (It also makes anyone in urban areas very jealous when I mention what my rent is.)
Visiting pet-owning friends is an excellent option. I have a friend (who may or may not chime in here) who's volunteering for her local humane society, and part of her job is playing with the animals and helping socialise them.
