Salon post: February 22

Good morning!

Topic of the week
Things you look forward to in the coming next season where you are (we are in what may be the tail end of the last significant storm here in New England.)

What I've been up to
I am running around getting ready for a quick and weirdly timed work trip (flying very early Saturday morning, getting back very late Monday night, the actual work stuff is Saturday evening through noonish Monday).

So I'm posting this and then going to the laundromat, as one does.

Comments are welcome whenever you get a chance - even if that's hours or days later. Feel free to jump into whatever sub-threads intrigue you. More discussion is the point of the salon posts!

Got a question you're trying to sort out, or a thing you'd like to discuss? Lots of thoughtful interesting people with a wide range of interests show up here! Feel free to ask about things you're thinking about or trying to solve, as well as other kinds of chat.

House rules:
This is a public post, feel free to encourage other people to drop by, just note the 'if posting anonymously, include a name people can call you in responses' rule.

1) Consider this a conversation in my living room, only with a lot more seating. I reserve the right to redirect, screen, and otherwise moderate stuff, but would vastly prefer not to have to. Keeping conversations SFW is appreciated.

2) If you don't have a DW account or want to post anonymously, please include a name we can call you in this particular post. (You can say AnonymousOne or your favourite colour or whatever. Just something to help keep conversations clear.)

3) If you've got a question or concern, feel free to PM me.

Oh, god, choice paralysis.

I went to the Soviet Union & some neighboring countries, when I was 16, with a peacenik singing group. Visited to Estonia (just after it declared independence), Ukraine (2-3 months before it declared independence), and parts of the actual Soviet Union. Took a ferry from Finland. Sang at a 50,000 person choral fest.

Had some Estonian songs in our repertoire that they literally had been forbidden from singing by the Soviets, so (when other people sang them), they stood up silently, instead. At this point, they kept standing, but also sang. (With tears.)

About half of us took a tour of a decommissioned Orthodox church, later in the trip. Powerful place. We knew a piece of sacred choral music, and we had the director with us, so we somehow spontaneously started singing it. Chills.

Recently/locally, there's the Wheaton Farm conservation area, about a mile from my house. I moved to Easton in August, and I'm enjoying getting to know the area. This is a nice walk; there's a pond that's part of the Easton water supply (so it's protected, obviously), and a bunch of birds hang out there. Good sunsets.
