Salon post: January 4
Welcome to a new calendar year!
I know I said I wasn't likely to manage a salon post today, because moving apartments, but then I woke up extra early, so here! Have a post. I'll be packing up my computer mid-morning, and then, y'know, busily pointing movers in the right directions. So I won't be around much today, but I'm sure we can all manage.
Topic of the week
Do you have traditions or superstitions about moving into a new place, or starting a new project, or basically anything new that happens sometimes?
(As always, whatever other topics people want to talk about very welcome. Start a thread, see who joins in.)
What I've been up to
Packing things. Also moving things and cleaning things. And training a new assistant at work. I am very much looking forward to being in my new place, as unpacking is much more satisfying for me.
Useful notes
Consider tracking this post to get notifications of new comments. Select the bell icon (or the words 'track this'). More help over here, and more about notifications in general here.
Comments are welcome whenever you get a chance - even if that's hours or days later. Feel free to jump into whatever sub-threads intrigue you. More discussion is the point of the salon posts!
Got a question you're trying to sort out, or a thing you'd like to discuss? Lots of thoughtful interesting people with a wide range of interests show up here! Feel free to ask about things you're thinking about or trying to solve, as well as other kinds of chat.
House rules:
This is a public post, feel free to encourage other people to drop by, just note the 'if posting anonymously, include a name people can call you in responses' rule.
* Consider this a conversation in my living room, only with a lot more seating. I reserve the right to redirect, screen, and otherwise moderate stuff, but would vastly prefer not to have to. Keeping conversations SFW is appreciated.
* If you don't have a DW account or want to post anonymously, please include a name we can call you in this particular post. (You can say AnonymousOne or your favourite colour or whatever. Just something to help keep conversations clear.)
* If you've got a question or concern, feel free to PM me.

Moving traditions
I have the tradition of bringing a new broom into the new place (this time I splurged and got a really really lovely broom from
I also believe the first things into the house should be honey, bread, and salt. Honey for sweetness and productivity, bread for sustenance and transformation, and salt for flavour and cleansing. Roughly speaking.
(These are a fairly common folk tradition in different places, though with somewhat different associations.)
Re: Moving traditions
And wow, those brooms are *lovely*.

Re: Moving traditions
It hasn't always been a bad experience for me, but it has usually been associated with enough bad things in my life that I haven't ever thought to build a tradition to make it a positive thing.
Re: Moving traditions
I like the thing about honey, bread, and salt being the first things in a new home. I might try to wrangle that for whenever we move out of hell this year. (Goal: by end of May.)
