I am at work, and have tested - you can get a 5x8 pad in there, with a little cautious levering (and assuming you don't mind the possibility of a little bending at the corner.)

It's easiest if you put the notepad in first, and then other stuff, but there's definitely room for keys, phone, a moderate paperback book, etc.
